The article analyzes the process of modernization of Brazilian agriculture. Begun in the mid-twentieth century, this modernization has enabled the country to become one of the world’s leading agricultural producers and exporters, occupying a prominent world position in many products such as soy, orange
juice, sugar, meat, coffee, ethanol, corn and cotton. Despite the modernization of Brazilian agribusiness, a large segment of lowincome fiscal and economic properties subsists, which incorporates millions of farmers dedicated to a subsistence activity.
