The aim of this paper is to understand the ideas of Vieira Souto on currency and exchange in Brazil during the First Republic. Historiography does not discuss the economic thougth that influenced the debate about economic policies in the period. For him, the currency was not related to the oscillations of the exchange rate, but to the variations in the transactions with the foreign market. Thus, he presents an interpretation of the Brazilian economic reality that allows him to be characterized as a precursor of developmentalism in Brazil.
