Abstract

The present article intends to demonstrate how the transoceanic maritime transport was revolutionized during the second cycle of industrialization in the context of the rise of monopoly capitalism. In this text, we intend to discuss the existence of the Second Industrial Revolution. Working with criticisms of the interpretations that affirm it, we will link the really existing process to the exploration of new technical-scientific potential by imperialism. The main objective of this work is to demonstrate the great transformations (qualitative and quantitative) in the transoceanic navigation with the introduction of another material and technical base, as well as new technologies; however, we will try to correlate these changes with a new economic-social paradigm marked by the globalization of capitalism.

Thiago Vinícius Mantuano da Fonseca, PPGH-UFF; Projeto Acervo SPU-MPOG/UFF/BID

Doutorando no curso de Pós-Graduação em História Social da Universidade Federal Fluminense, onde também é graduado em História (2014) e mestre em História Social (2017). Foi bolsista de Iniciação Científica pelo CNPq/UFF por dois anos e bolsista do Programa de Excelência Acadêmica pela CAPES, nível de mestrado, igualmente por dois anos; hoje também é bolsista do Programa de Excelência Acadêmica pela CAPES, nível de doutorado, sob orientação do Prof. Dr. Cezar Honorato. É membro do grupo de pesquisa Portos e Cidades no Mundo Atlântico (CNPq), do laboratório POLIS - História Econômico-Social (UFF), do grupo de investigação internacional La Governanza de los Puertos Atlánticos (UNED - ESP) e sócio da Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em História Econômica, além de colaborador do Foro Internacional de Ciudades Portuarias (IDEHES/CONICET - ARG) e do laboratório HEQUS - História Econômica, Quantitativa e Social (UFF). Estuda a História do Brasil Império e Republicano, com experiência na área da História Econômica e no campo da História Urbano-Portuária. Investiga e desenvolve trabalhos acerca do porto, operação portuária, região portuária, processos de trabalho e processo produtivo portuário, navegação histórica e cidade do Rio de Janeiro. Atualmente trabalha como Estagiário Sênior no Projeto Acervo da Superintendência do Patrimônio da União, em cooperação com a UFF (Fundação Euclides da Cunha) e o Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento.
