This article examines the activity of the port of Paranaguá at the time of the creation of the province of Paraná (1853). Based on the concepts of continental port and Atlantic port, formulated by Thiago Dias, and in the creation of a database primarily from daily newspapers published between 1854 and 1867, it first examines the relations of the port of Paranaguá with ports in the Río de la Plata region and Chile, where the export of the province's key product, yerba mate, predominated. Secondly, it analyzes the commercial relations with the ports of the Brazilian Empire, with emphasis on the ports of Santa Catarina and, above all, Rio de Janeiro. The latter, specifically, constituted the main gateway for goods from the global economic system into the newly emancipated province of Paraná.
